Olympus Volleyball

RULES &
REGULATIONS

Olympus Volleyball follows standard FIVB and Volleyball Canada rules with minor league-specific adjustments. All players are expected to play with good sportsmanship.

Official FIVB Rules

Co-ed Rules

Gender requirement

Each team must have a minimum of 2 women and 4 men on the court at all times. Teams with fewer than 2 women present default their match.

Serving rotation

No restriction on service order by gender — players rotate normally.

Blocking rule

If the last touch before going over the net was by a female player, male back-row players may jump to block above the net.

The Court

Court dimensions

Indoor court: 18 m × 9 m, divided by a net. Attack lines are drawn 3 m from the center line on each side.

Net height

Men's or co-ed competition: 2.43 m (7 ft 11⅝ in). Women's competition: 2.24 m (7 ft 4⅛ in).

Ball

Regulation indoor volleyball, circumference 65–67 cm, inflated to 0.300–0.325 kg/cm².

Scoring

Match format

Matches are typically best-of-3 sets. The first two sets are played to 25 points (must win by 2). A deciding set (if needed) is played to 15 points (must win by 2), with no cap.

Rally scoring

A point is scored on every rally regardless of who served. The winning team of each rally scores a point and serves next.

Pool play (league & tournaments)

Pool play games are 2 sets straight to 25 (cap 27). Teams earn 1 point per set won toward standings.

Service

Service order

Players rotate clockwise. The server stands behind the end line and has 8 seconds to serve after the referee's whistle.

Let serve

A serve that touches the net and lands in the opponent's court is in play (no let-serve rule).

Foot fault

The server must not step on or over the end line before making contact with the ball.

Team Composition

Team size

6 players on the court at a time (3 front row, 3 back row). A team may have up to 14 players on the roster.

Libero

Teams may designate 1–2 libero players, who wear a contrasting jersey and specialize in back-row defense. Liberos cannot attack above the net height or serve.

Substitutions

Each team is allowed 6 substitutions per set. A player and substitute may only switch positions once per set.

General Conduct

Sportsmanship

All players, coaches, and spectators are expected to demonstrate fair play and respect for opponents, teammates, and officials at all times.

Yellow / Red card

Unsportsmanlike conduct may result in a warning (yellow card), penalty point (red card), or expulsion from the match.

Protests

A team captain may address the referee to request clarification on a ruling. Protests must be lodged before the next serve.
